How to Keep Fresh Flowers Looking Beautiful Longer: Florist Tips from DiBella Flowers & Gifts

You just received a gorgeous bouquet. It's sitting on the kitchen counter looking like it belongs in a magazine, and you're determined to keep it that way.

Then three days later... one flower starts drooping, the water looks questionable, and you're wondering if you somehow offended the roses.

Good news... it's probably not you.

Fresh flowers naturally have a lifespan, but a few simple tricks can help them stay beautiful much longer. Here are the same tips our designers at DiBella Flowers & Gifts use to keep flowers looking their best.

1. Give Your Vase a Bath First

Your vase may look clean, but leftover bacteria from previous arrangements can shorten the life of fresh flowers.

Wash it with warm, soapy water before filling it with fresh, cool water. Think of it as giving your bouquet a clean hotel room instead of checking it into one that hasn't been cleaned since the last guests.

2. Give the Stems a Fresh Haircut

Before placing your flowers in water, trim about an inch off each stem at a 45-degree angle.

Why? Flowers drink through their stems. A fresh cut helps them absorb water more easily, kind of like replacing a clogged straw with a brand-new one.

Repeat this every couple of days for the best results.

3. Fresh Water Makes Happy Flowers

Flowers love clean water.

Replace the water every two to three days and rinse the vase while you're at it. It only takes a minute, and your bouquet will thank you by sticking around a little longer.

Cloudy water is basically your flowers waving a tiny white flag.

4. Don't Throw Away the Flower Food

That little packet attached to your bouquet isn't an afterthought.

Flower food contains nutrients to feed the flowers and ingredients that help reduce bacteria in the water. It's basically breakfast, lunch, and dinner for your bouquet.

No flower food? Regular water changes are the next best thing.

5. Flowers Aren't Fans of Las Vegas Weather Either

Fresh flowers love bright rooms, but they don't love direct sunlight, hot windows, air conditioning vents, or heating vents.

If you're uncomfortable standing somewhere in the middle of July, your flowers probably aren't thrilled either.

Keep them somewhere cool, and they'll reward you with a longer vase life.

6. Keep Them Away From the Fruit Bowl

Here's one that surprises almost everyone.

Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which tells flowers it's time to age faster.

So while apples and bananas make great snacks, they're terrible roommates for fresh flowers.

7. Remove Flowers That Have Seen Better Days

Eventually, one bloom will decide it's finished being fabulous.

Remove fading flowers as they wilt to help keep the rest of the arrangement looking fresh and healthy. One droopy flower doesn't have to take the whole bouquet down with it.

Which Flowers Last the Longest?

Some flowers naturally stay fresh longer than others.

A few customer favorites include:

  • Alstroemeria
  • Carnations
  • Chrysanthemums
  • Orchids
  • Lilies
  • Sunflowers
  • Roses (with proper care)

If long-lasting flowers are important to you, just ask. Our designers are always happy to recommend blooms that are known for their staying power.
