Holiday Highlight: Mother’s Day

by Jeffrey Balch

Mothers should be celebrated every day, but on the second Sunday in May, we have a day dedicated to nothing but mom. Mother’s Day is the perfect time to send mom something special! Keep reading to learn more about its history and the best flower choices to send your mom.

History

Mothers have had special celebration days as far back as Ancient Greece and Rome, where there were festivals to honor the mother goddesses. What we think of today as Mother’s Day in the United States began in the early 1900s. Anna Jarvis came up with the idea of Mother’s Day as a way to honor the sacrifices mothers make for their children. In 1908, she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration and began campaigning for it to become a national holiday soon after. By 1912, many states, towns, and churches had adopted Mother’s Day as a yearly holiday, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

There are so many gifts you could choose to give your mom on Mother’s Day, but flowers are an absolute classic! Here are some of the best ones to send your mom:

Roses

Who doesn’t love roses? Red roses are typically associated with romance, but there are all kinds of other colors you can choose from to send to your mom! Pink roses represent appreciation, love, and gratitude. White and cream roses stand for purity and thoughtfulness, while peach roses mean sincerity, care, and gratitude. You can’t go wrong with any color, though! Mom is going to love them.

Carnations

Carnations are the most traditional Mother’s Day flower and the one that started the holiday after Anna Jarvis sent them to every mother in her church’s congregation. She sent white, which is a symbol of unconditional love or luck, but pink carnations are also a great choice because they represent a mother’s love.

Daisies

Gerbera daisies have become a popular choice for Mother’s Day! These brightly-hued blooms come in all kinds of colors and generally stand for cheerfulness and loyalty. Gerberas bring an instant smile to anyone’s face, so they’re a perfect choice to send on Mother’s Day.
